A Big Week of Firsts for Lily

We met a big milestone in our family this week - our first child started school.  Mommy was anxious, Lily was excited and fearless.  She was bouncing with every step at her school open house.  She loved meeting her teacher and finding her desk.  It was a little hectic in the classroom trying to help the kids and parents unload school supplies, get everything labeled and located, etc.  But Lily was too excited to be bothered by the chaos.  She loves her teacher's long dark hair and cute classroom decorations.

She woke up an hour early on the first day to be sure she wouldn't miss the bus.  She wanted to wear a dress for her first day.  Such a cutie.  She was smiling so big, it made her eyes close in all the pictures!

She climbed on the bus without even looking back at me.  And a piece of my heart rode away on that giant school bus.  I was not prepared for the tearing feeling I got in my chest.  It was so hard to let her go and do it with a smile and a wave.  Plus keep a smile on my face for the other two still at home.  Somehow we all survived the first day and emotions were much better for day two.

Her teacher's name is Mrs C./Sra. Cotrina.  When class is in English, they call their teacher Mrs. C; when they are learning Spanish, she is Sra. Cotrina.  This month they will learn colors and numbers in Spanish as well as classroom directions and how to do greetings and goodbyes.  Lily is soaking it up.  She loves it.  She gets to sit with her friend Brigham Hammon from Primary.  They have been playing together at recess and trying to find their Primary friends in the other kindergarten classes on the playground.  So far, she's got this school thing down.

Another first for Lily this week was clogging.  She loves it already.  We bought a pair of brand new looking used shoes from a friend of mine for only $5.  Lily wore them around the garage and house for two days.  Clogging is so much more active than the dance she was doing last year and I can tell Lily is smitten.  She learned five basic clogging steps on the first day and then they played a fun musical chairs type game with the new steps.  Then for the last ten minutes of class, the teacher turned off the lights, put on silly kid music and let everyone come and dance on the floor.

We didn't have to tell Tommy he was allowed to dance twice.  He ran out to join the big kids on the floor.  He spent the entire hour of class sitting at my feet and listening to the taps of the shoes.  He was mesmerized.  Not sure if he'll want to dance when he's older, but he loves it now!  When we had to leave so the next class could come in, Tommy threw a fit and tried to throw himself out of my arms.  Don't come between this baby and his dance moves.  He's a dancing machine.

Our only issue with school this first week was the bus.  On the first day of school, Lily came home two and a half hours after school was let out.  Two and a half hours!  I was beside myself with worry waiting for her to get back.  The bus routes were a mess, some children had been put on the wrong buses, and they were trying to drop every child at their front door plus teach them about bus safety.  I was a wreck while waiting for her.  They apologized for the delay and said things would be better the next day.  Day two of busing meant she was home two hours rather than two and a half hours late.  A third bus had been added to try and help get the kids home faster....but it created even more problems.  At an hour and a half, I called the transportation dispatch office to locate Lily.  She was matched up to the wrong address and had been put on the wrong bus.  But eventually they figured it out and got her home.  One of her friends was also put on a wrong bus and let off the bus at the wrong house!  That was a nightmare.  It took the bus drivers and her mother over an hour to locate her.  I am so glad Lily at least stayed on the bus because she knew none of those stops were the right one!  For day three of bus riding, I met Lily at school, made sure she boarded the right bus, and followed the bus to our house to find out why the route takes so long.  Maybe since I was following the driver, they dropped Lily off first and she was home less than 20 minutes after school let out. Victory! Lily told us that she started to cry on the bus the first day because it was taking so long and she was afraid they wouldn't get her home before bed time.

What amazes me is that she was perfectly willing to get on the bus again the next day.  So proud of my brave girl.  Here's hoping for a smoother second week.
